Quick checklist

  • Count the pieces and note dimensions
  • Remove personal belongings and loose obstacles
  • Measure the tightest fixed points on the route
  • Share stairs, elevator, parking, and timing details
  • Confirm scope and handling before pickup

Start with the route, not the sofa

A sofa can be lighter than a dresser and still be harder to remove. The challenge is usually the route: a narrow apartment door, a sharp corridor turn, a stair landing, or an elevator with a protected interior. Walk the entire path from the sofa to the loading area before the pickup day. Move shoes, rugs, plants, floor lamps, and small tables out of that path.

Measure the piece at its widest points

Measure width, depth, and height. Include arms, attached cushions, recliner handles, and the sleeper mechanism if the sofa has one. Then measure the doorway opening, hall width, ceiling height at stair turns, and elevator door. A diagonal route may help, but measurements should go to the provider so the crew can assess it.

Identify removable parts without forcing them

Loose cushions, slipcovers, and detachable legs are easy to identify. Some sofas have removable backs or sectional connectors; others can be damaged by improvised disassembly. Photograph the underside and connection points. Do not cut upholstery or remove structural fasteners unless the pickup provider confirms the plan.

Confirm apartment rules

Ask management whether the elevator must be reserved, wall or floor protection is required, loading access has a time limit, or a certificate of insurance is needed. Share the unit floor, elevator dimensions, stair count, and the distance from the building exit to the loading position.

Choose the right pickup route

Dayton residents may also have a city bulk-waste option for qualifying furniture, but it requires advance scheduling and curb or alley placement rules. A private in-home removal service is a different job: confirm whether the quoted scope includes carrying the sofa from its current room.
